So I was watching a clip online today and it made me think about the art of being a Hype Man and who is the best at it. Well if you know and follow Hip Hop then immediately you are thinking about two people for the top spot. After mentioning one of these two you may find it hard to even think of other on stage side kicks that can hold a mic to the spastic kings. Well what I have done is compiled a list of the top 5 Hype Men that I have witnessed live and felt the energy in the room change when they tell it too.
5: Memphis Bleek
Most people diss Memph Bleek because you his inability to make Jay-Z level records (no one can do that), so while dealing with that and the internal turmoil of The Roc Memph Man decided that he was gonna ride for his homie. While he isn't the most animated on stage the chemistry is undeniable between him and his big brother. I do hope that Bleek comes back on the solo artist side of things, but until then catch him rocking Coming of Age part 6 Live.
4: Too Big M.C
Most of the youngins are thinking "Who the hell is Too Big M.C??!?" well kiddie Too Big MC was the overweight right hand/ hype man for one of the world's greatest entertainers.....MC Hammer. You can imagine that to be a hype man for hammer you have to have charisma and stamina. Too Big had both (remember this was the late 80's when thinking about Charisma) all the way down to the white shade (waaay before Fabo) and the Tick Tack (white)Stacey Adams. Too Big didn't stay around long though I heard it was because he didn't feel he got enough shine and his brother (who was Hammer's Dj convinced him to bounce a go solo. I bought the album, but not "Too" many other followed suit.
3: Lil John
Although Lil' John had a rap group I've only heard him rhyme maybe 4 times and that's because he knew what he was good at.....Getting this thang crunk! Way before Chappelle made him a household name/caricature Lil' John was inspiring kids everywhere to punch somebody dead in the eye. I mean he is the king of crunk so why wouldn't he be on the list. By the way "Who You Wit" is still may favorite hype man Lil' John song
2: Flava Flav
I you don't know who this man/legend is then you must have grown up on that island in Alaska with Russia in the back yard. Every time I hear "Bass in your face London.." I immediately have a change in moods. Flava is the godfather of hype men every where and where he differed was because he was the mascot of Public Enemy Professor X was suppose to be the hype man, but no man can shine when Flav is on stage. I wonder if this is the underlying reason why they had beef for a minute.
1: Spliff Starr
It was a hard decision between Flav and Spliff, but Spliffa Spliff really embodies the Flav character and adds what appears to be a crack baby's energy and the combination is pure FIRE! IF you watch Spliff and Busta perform today you will get the same adrenaline rush you got 10yrs ago. Just as Flava Flav is the godfather of hype men Spliff Star is very much so the King of hype men.
Honorable mention: Fatman Scoop
Fatman Scoop a.k.a Big Colorado (does he still go by that?) is only an honorable mention because he was more of a freelance hype man. With one of the most distinctive voices in the music game his tone alone commands attention. I would hire him to back my artist up anytime!
Don't agree with the list then tell who you think should up here.
